Gemini is the strictest of the big three, and it is not close.
OpenAI keeps erotica behind a locked door. Google built a wall. Google's Prohibited Use Policy lists sexually explicit content as banned outright, next to extremist content and non-consensual imagery. There is no tier where it becomes allowed.
And the stakes are different. With ChatGPT, the worst case is a refusal. With Google, the account at risk is the one holding your email, your photos and your documents.

What the policy actually bans
Sexually explicit content is on the prohibited list, full stop. Google's Prohibited Use Policy groups it with content relating to child sexual abuse, violent extremism, non-consensual intimate imagery, self-harm facilitation, hate speech and harassment.
That grouping is the point. OpenAI puts erotica in a middle tier and keeps the key. Google puts it with the things nobody unlocks. If you are waiting for a Gemini version of adult mode, nothing in the policy suggests one is coming.
Trying to get around the filters is also covered. Circumventing safety protections is listed as a violation in its own right. The jailbreak counts even when it does not work.
The part most guides skip: your account
Enforcement does not stop at the chat window.
Google's help pages say confirmed violations trigger notifications in the product and by email. Repeated violations may restrict your generative AI usage and your Google account.
Think about what that covers. For most people, the Google account is the email address they use for everything. Plus photos, documents, and their phone. That is a very different risk from a chatbot saying no. It is the main thing to understand before you go testing Gemini's limits for fun.
There is an appeals route. If you are restricted and think it was a mistake, the notice and email include a link to appeal. Good to know it exists. Better not to need it.
How the filtering works
Both directions, in real time. Google's filters check your prompt before generation and the output afterwards. Content that gets partway through can still be pulled.
That double check is why Gemini feels blunt next to other assistants. It is not weighing your intent. It is matching categories at two checkpoints. People who test all three for adult copywriting say the same thing: Gemini will not even flirt.
The AI Studio exception, and its limits
Here is the nuance almost every page gets wrong in one direction or the other.
Google AI Studio is the developer tool, and it shows safety settings the normal app hides. Under advanced settings you can adjust filters by category, including one for sexually explicit content, and turn the threshold down or off. The sliders are real. They do change what gets blocked.
What they do not do is change the policy. The same Prohibited Use Policy covers AI Studio and the Gemini app. Lowering a filter changes the automatic blocking, not the rules you agreed to. Your usage is still logged against your account. Pages calling this a Gemini NSFW mode are describing a safety control as if it were a permission slip.
It genuinely helps researchers, moderation work, clinical writing, and mature fiction that keeps tripping an over-eager filter. It does not help you produce explicit content. That stays banned whatever the slider says.
How the three compare
- Gemini. Explicit content banned outright, with no route in the policy to unlock it. Worst case: restrictions on your Google account.
- ChatGPT. Erotica gated rather than banned, and only OpenAI can lift the gate. Worst case: a refusal.
- Grok. Adult text broadly allowed, behind an 18+ setting you control yourself. Worst case: a refusal.

If Gemini is your daily assistant

Keep Gemini for what it is good at. It is deeply wired into Docs, Gmail and Android, and for that work it is excellent. Nothing here suggests otherwise.
Just do not test its limits on the account that holds your life. That advice stands whatever you use instead. The trade is bad: a mildly interesting refusal on one side, a restriction on ten years of email on the other.
If you want adult conversation, use something where that is the product rather than a breach. NSFW AI built for it has nothing to enforce against you. And adult AI chat on its own account keeps this away from your work identity, which is worth something by itself.
Where we are honestly worse: Secret Desires will not draft your emails, live in your spreadsheets, or run on your phone as an assistant. It does one thing. Gemini is a better assistant and this was never that comparison.
