The old filter scanned for words. The current one reads the conversation.

Moderation now weighs the whole conversation: history, tone, how things escalated, what you seem to be going for. Not individual words. That one change explains two confusing things at once.

Why the old workarounds died. Misspellings, spacing tricks, code words, elaborate personas. All of them aimed at a keyword matcher that is gone. A system reading intent sees the disguised request and the plain one as the same request.

Why it sometimes feels looser. For a verified adult in an established scene, it often is. The same message can land differently depending on where the conversation has been. That reads as inconsistency. It is the system working as designed.

#Verification is the actual variable

Character AI now scores accounts rather than asking everyone the same question.

The platform reads signals from login and activity. Most adult accounts are never asked for anything. If the signals are unclear, you get a verification prompt: a face-estimation check run by a third party, with an ID route if that does not settle it.

A few practical notes that come up repeatedly:

• A failed check usually locks retries for about 24 hours. Rapid repeat attempts can extend that.
• Lighting and framing matter more than people expect. Front-facing camera, face fully visible, at eye level.
• If the app keeps failing, try the desktop site. It is the most common fix reported.
• If a lock runs past 48 hours, that is a support question rather than something to keep retrying.

Legal and regulatory pressure, arriving all at once.

Through 2025 and into 2026 the company faced lawsuits, a federal regulator inquiry, and new state law. California's SB 243 took effect in January 2026 and put specific duties on companion chatbot operators, including telling users they are talking to an AI. Multiple lawsuits settled that same month.

Then in May 2026, Pennsylvania's attorney general brought a different kind of case. It alleged that characters on the platform had impersonated licensed medical professionals. One reportedly gave a state investigator a fake licence number.

The age checks and the tiered experience came out of that pressure. Whatever you think of the result, it was not a design preference.

Verified adults get a much wider lane than before. For collaborative fiction, worldbuilding and character-driven stories, Character AI is still genuinely strong. The creator community is enormous, and nothing else comes close on sheer number of user-built characters.

What it will not do is explicit content. The filter loosened in degree, not in kind. There is no verified-adult tier that switches it off. If that is what you want, you want a different category of product. That is the honest answer, not a sales line.
