Where the word came from
Popeye, oddly enough. "Goon" as slang for a dim-witted person traces back to Alice the Goon, a character from the Popeye comics. It also gets linked to the slack, undignified expression people make while doing it.
The practice appeared online in the early 2000s, most likely on 4chan, among communities reported to be mostly gay men at the time. The earliest Urban Dictionary entry dates to 2005. Through the late 2000s it drew on porn-addiction fetish communities on Tumblr, which is where much of the subculture's language comes from.
Then it went mainstream. Interest climbed after the pandemic and spiked in 2023. The word crossed onto TikTok as Gen Z and Gen Alpha slang, where it now gets used to mean excitement about almost anything, usually as a joke.
Gooning and edging are not quite the same
The cleanest formulation people use: all gooning is edging, but not all edging is gooning.
Edging is a technique — approach the edge, back off, repeat, usually finishing eventually. It can take ten minutes.
Gooning is edging used to get somewhere else. The aim is the mental state, not the orgasm, and it runs for hours rather than minutes. The community genuinely disagrees about whether finishing disqualifies it. That tells you the definition is about the headspace, not the mechanics.
The subculture part
This is where it stops being just a technique.
Gooners gather on Reddit and Discord, sometimes as a group activity, sharing porn and memes. The goon cave, a dedicated space with several screens, is part of the aesthetic.
One thing is worth stating plainly, because it explains a lot. Part of the subculture eroticises the loss of control itself. Being someone who cannot stop is framed as the appeal rather than the downside. That is how the community talks about itself, not an outsider's judgement.

In Britain, a Gooner is an Arsenal fan. Completely unrelated, much older, and entirely innocent.
The nickname comes from "Gunners," the club's long-standing nickname, softened over time. It has been in use for decades.
This produces reliably excellent confusion. When the Guardian described Anne Hathaway as a "secret Gooner" in 2024, American readers reacted with alarm. Keir Starmer has said "I am a gooner" in Parliament, meaning the football club.
If someone tells you they are a Gooner, context is doing a great deal of work.
The line worth knowing about
Long sessions you chose and enjoyed are one thing. Not being able to stop is another.
Wikipedia's entry notes that gooners may develop erectile dysfunction or addiction from excessive practice. A large share of the writing about gooning online is recovery-oriented rather than enthusiastic.
The practical markers are not mysterious:
- Sessions that run far longer than you meant them to, repeatedly
- Skipping things you cared about to do it
- Feeling worse afterwards rather than satisfied
- Needing more extreme material to get the same effect
- Trying to cut down and not managing it
