Where the word comes from
寝取られ, netorare. It comes from the verb netoru, meaning to steal someone's partner. Netorare is the passive form, so the word is built from the point of view of the person it happens to. The grammar itself is the genre.
It became a recognisable subgenre in Japanese adult manga and visual novels through the early 2000s, then spread internationally through translations and fan scanlations.
English writing often translates it as "cuckold," which is close enough to be useful and wrong in a way that matters. More on that below.
The family of related tags
NTR is one of four, and mixing them up is the most common mistake.
- Netorare (NTR). Your partner is taken. You are the one losing.
- Netori. You are the one doing the taking. Same situation, opposite chair.
